Chimney Crown Repair

The crown is the concrete or mortar slab at the very top of the chimney — different from the cap, which sits over the flue opening. A cracked crown lets water into the masonry below it, which is a slower but more expensive problem than a damaged cap.

Freeze-Thaw Cracking

DFW doesn't get the deep freezes of the north, but our occasional hard cold snaps are still enough to crack water-saturated crown concrete, especially on older or poorly sloped crowns.

Crown vs. Cap — Why the Difference Matters

A damaged cap mainly affects the flue opening. A damaged crown affects the entire top surface of the chimney and can let water travel down between the flue and the outer masonry, causing damage you won't see until it's advanced.

Sealing & Rebuilding

Minor cracking is sealed with a flexible waterproof crown coating. More significant damage means removing and repouring the crown with a proper wash (slope) so water sheds away instead of pooling.
